Football Club Drita, commonly known as Drita, takes its name from the Albanian word meaning 'light'. The club was established by citizens of Gjilan and has maintained its Albanian identity throughout its existence. The team's home ground, the Gjilan City Stadium, was built in 1947, the same year the club was founded, when it competed within the Yugoslav league system.
Most recent season and achievements
During the 2025-26 season, Drita achieved significant milestones in European competition. The club became the second from Kosovo to reach the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League by defeating Differdange 03 4-2 on aggregate. They also became the second club from Kosovo to reach the European league stage by defeating the same opponent during the 2025-26 UEFA Conference League play-off round.
History
Early years
In 1947, Drita was founded by Gjilan citizens, with the name taken from other sports clubs in the city. The early years were challenging, particularly due to rivalry with the city's other team, Crvena zvezda Gnjilane. Unlike their rivals, Drita's founders and footballers were exclusively Albanians. This nationalistic differentiation led to the team being abolished by the regime in 1952. Former footballers joined the multi-ethnic team of Zvezda, but Drita wasn't completely erased. They competed in the Kosovo Province League, where they were declared champions in the 1962-63 season.
Successful period
Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991, Albanian separatists formed the Football Federation of Kosovo. Drita joined this new league system, playing in fields around the mountains near Gjilan. The most successful period came under the management of Selami Osmani, known as Bezi, who led the club for 15 years. Under his guidance, Drita won the Kosovo championship in 2002-03, claimed the cup in 2000-01, and finished as runners-up in 1999-2000 and 2001-02. The club also reached the semifinals in 1999-00, 2001-02, and 2002-03, setting a Kosovo record by not falling below third position for four consecutive years.
Crisis and recovery
On 21 July 2016, businessmen Valon Murseli and Flamur Bunjaku took over the club, promising significant improvements. Their investment paid off when Drita won their second championship title in the 2017-18 season.
Current period
In 2020, following the dismissal of the previous coach, Ardian Nuhiu was appointed as first team manager. He successfully led the team to victory in the 2019-20 season after defeating SCGj. The 2017-18 season was particularly remarkable as Drita remained undefeated throughout, breaking their previous record from the 2002-03 season with 30 undefeated games.

On 26 June 2018, they defeated FC Santa Coloma at Victoria Stadium in Gibraltar, becoming the first Kosovar side to win a UEFA Champions League match. During the 2025-26 season, the club became the second from Kosovo to reach the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and the European league stage.
Traditional Rivals
Gjilani
The most significant rivalry exists between Drita and Gjilani, known as the Anamorava Derby. This fierce competition represents one of the strongest rivalries in the Football Superleague of Kosovo. The derby atmosphere begins three days before the match, transforming the city's nightlife with an atmosphere that occurs only during national holidays. Fans from both camps, the Skifterat (Falcons) supporting Gjilani and the Intelektualët (Intellectuals) supporting Drita, live under derby fever throughout the week. One hour before the match, the two groups organize separately to avoid incidents, dividing the streets leading to the stadium while Kosovo Police coordinate to prevent any disturbances during this much-anticipated confrontation.
Club Traditions and Behind the Scenes
Nicknames
Drita's main supporter group is known as the Intelektualët (Intellectuals). This name was assigned after many debates because most of the players were not only footballers but also writers, poets, and politicians. The Intellectuals are considered the biggest ultras group in Kosovo.
Traditions and culture
The Intelektualët hold several records in Kosovo football, including the largest attendance record against Gjilani in 2011 with 13,000 fans. They also traveled with 30,000 fans to the final of the Kosovo Cup in 2002 at the Fadil Vokrri Stadium. However, there have been incidents involving hooligan groups, particularly during derbies against Gjilani, with the worst incident involving 13 injured fans during a confrontation with Prishtina supporters.
