Early years
The club originated from the fusion of three Ghent-based organizations: Athletic Club Gantois, F.C. Gantois, and Sport Pédestre Gantois. The newly formed Racing Club de Gand registered with the Belgian Football Association in the late 1890s and received matricule number 11. The club participated in the first division B during the 1898-99 and 1899-1900 seasons.
Successful period
From 1911 to 1935, R.C. de Gand established itself as a consistent first division presence, with only brief relegations in 1922-23 and 1930-31. The club achieved its historical peak with fifth-place finishes in 1925 and 1929. During this era, the club also reached the final of the first Belgian Cup in history in 1912, though they finished as runners-up. In 1925, the club changed its name to R.R.C. de Gand.
Crisis and recovery
After returning to the first division in 1952, the club experienced its final top-flight season. Three years later, relegation to the third division marked the beginning of a prolonged decline from which the club never recovered to higher levels. The club underwent several mergers and name changes: in 1987, R.R.C. Gent merged with F.C. Heirnis Gent to become R.R.C. Heirnis Gent.
Current period
The club's identity continued evolving through additional mergers and name changes. In 1999, it briefly returned to R.R.C. Gent before merging with K.V.V. Standaard Meulestede in 2000 to become R.R.C. Gent-Zeehaven. Following a 2002 merger with K.F.C. Oostakker, the club became K.R.C. Gent-Zeehaven. Finally, in 2016, the club adopted its current name, K.R.C. Gent.
Achievements and Honors
Domestic competitions
The club's domestic achievements include one Belgian Second Division title in 1930-31 and one runners-up finish in 1922-23. In cup competitions, the club reached the final of the inaugural Belgian Cup in 1911-12, finishing as runners-up in this historic tournament.
