FC Koper, commonly referred to as FC Koper or simply Koper, is a Slovenian football club that competes in the top flight of Slovenian football. The club has undergone numerous name changes throughout its century-long existence, reflecting the political and social changes in the region.

The club's most recent major achievement was winning the Slovenian Cup in 2021–22, marking their fourth cup triumph. They also finished as runners-up in the Slovenian First League during the same season.
History
Early years
The club was formed as Circolo sportivo Capodistriano in 1920, with the team consisting of students, workers and fishermen. The original club colors were black and white. In 1928, the organization was renamed as Unione sportiva Capodistriana, and six years later became known as Libertas.
Successful period
After World War II, the club became part of a larger sports association and was renamed as Aurora. By 1948, there were five clubs operating in the Koper area: Aurora, Meduza, Partizan, Edilit, and Adria. In 1955, Aurora and Meduza merged to create NK Koper. The club played under this name in different Yugoslav leagues until 1991 and established itself as one of the most successful Slovenian clubs during this period.
The club's golden era came in the 2009–10 season when, under the leadership of veteran player Miran Pavlin, they won the Slovenian PrvaLiga championship for the first time. This historic achievement secured them a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, where they were narrowly defeated by Dinamo Zagreb 5–4 on aggregate.
Crisis and recovery
At the beginning of the 1990s, following Slovenia's independence, the club achieved mid-table success in the newly formed Slovenian PrvaLiga. However, by the end of the 1990s, Koper had been relegated to the second division twice and faced serious financial problems, leading to their renaming as FC Koper.
The situation worsened when former owner Georg Suban left substantial debts and took half of the team with him when he moved to another Slovenian PrvaLiga team, Mura. The fans took control of the club and worked to improve its finances to prevent bankruptcy, similar to what had happened to three other major Slovenian clubs: Olimpija, Mura and Ljubljana.
In the 2005–06 season, Mladen Rudonja returned to the club and brought Serbian-American businessman Milan Mandarić, who paid off all remaining debts. Under new coach Milivoj Bračun, the club started an unbeaten run that led them to third place in the Slovenian PrvaLiga and their first Slovenian Cup victory, qualifying them for the UEFA Cup.
Current period
Following the 2016–17 season, Koper failed to obtain a competition licence and was excluded from the Slovenian top division. The club had to rebuild from lower divisions, winning the Littoral League in 2017–18 and the Slovenian Third League in 2018–19 before returning to higher levels of competition.

Domestic competitions
In Yugoslavia, Koper won the Slovenian Republic League twice (1984–85, 1987–88) and captured the Slovenian Republic Cup in consecutive years (1989–90, 1990–91).
Since Slovenia's independence, the club's most significant achievement has been winning the Slovenian First League in 2009–10. They have also been runners-up three times (2007–08, 2013–14, 2021–22). In cup competitions, Koper has won the Slovenian Cup four times (2005–06, 2006–07, 2014–15, 2021–22) and the Slovenian Supercup twice (2010, 2015).
Continental and global competitions
Koper's international competition experience includes participation in the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup, their first international tournament. Following their 2009–10 league triumph, they qualified for the UEFA Champions League, where they were eliminated by Dinamo Zagreb. The club has also participated in UEFA Cup qualifying rounds.
