Suwon FC is a South Korean professional football club based in Suwon that competes in the K League 1, South Korea's top professional league. Founded in 2003 as Suwon City Football Club, the team plays their home games at Suwon Stadium. The club began as a semi-professional team in the Korea National League before becoming fully professional in 2012 and joining the K League system. Their most notable achievement was winning the National League championship in 2010, and they have been runners-up in K League 2 twice, in 2015 and 2020.
Suwon FC was originally established by the Suwon city government to create a bridge between school-level football clubs within the city and Suwon Samsung Bluewings, the professional club based in the same city. The club has undergone significant transformation from its semi-professional origins to becoming a fully professional team competing in South Korea's top-tier football system.
The club has established itself as a competitive force in South Korean football, having achieved promotion to the top division and maintaining their professional status. Their journey from semi-professional beginnings to professional football represents one of the notable success stories in Korean football development.
On 15 March 2003, Suwon City Football Club was officially formed as a semi-professional team. The club appointed Kim Chang-kyum as their manager and joined the Korea National League, which was then called the K2 League. The team's first major success came in 2004 when they won the Korean President's Cup National Football Tournament, marking their first trophy.
Between 2005 and 2009, Suwon gradually developed into strong contenders in the Korea National League, reaching the play-offs on four occasions, though they failed to secure the championship during this period. The breakthrough finally came in the 2010 season when they became league champions after defeating Daejeon Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power 2–1 on aggregate in the final. Kim Chang-kyum departed after the 2011 season when his contract expired, and Cho Deok-je, who had been managing the club's youth team, took over.
On 9 December 2012, the club underwent a major transformation when it was officially announced that the team would become fully professional. The club's name was changed to Suwon FC and received approval to join the professional K League system.
Suwon FC joined the second-tier K League Challenge in the 2013 season. Their debut professional season was successful, finishing fourth in the league and becoming the only K League Challenge club to reach the quarter-finals in the FA Cup. The 2015 season proved to be a milestone when, after finishing third in the regular season, they progressed through the K League Challenge play-offs by eliminating Seoul E-Land and Daegu FC. In the promotion-relegation playoffs, they defeated top division side Busan IPark 3–0 on aggregate, securing promotion to the 2016 K League Classic.
