Their journey began on October 21, 2018, with a 2–0 victory against Super Delegates of Maryland in the opening qualifying round. The team continued their impressive run in the third qualifying round on November 18, 2018, facing Christos FC, a team known for their 2017 U.S. Open Cup run and composed largely of former college soccer players. Virginia United secured a crucial 2–1 victory to advance to the fourth and final qualifying round in April 2019, ultimately earning their historic qualification for the U.S. Open Cup.
